Artisan and Ecological Market of Gijón
The Gijón/Xixón Artisan and Ecological Market is located in the Plaza Mayor of Gijón/Xixón and is held on the second weekend of every month, with the exception of Easter and the Constitution long weekend, when it changes its usual date to coincide with these holidays when there is a large influx of tourists. Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Principality of Asturias, it is a benchmark for the city's artisan, gastronomic and tourist activities.
The quality of its products is its main distinguishing feature and
attraction, together with the activities and workshops that it has
been organising since its creation in 2002, which allow locals and
tourists to get to know the culture and reality of Asturias in a
participative and educational way.
The Market offers a wide
range of products, with crafts playing a leading role, and the
artisans themselves are in charge of the development of the event.
The Asturian handicrafts combine tradition and modernity, being exclusive and handmade, following the patterns of the ancient crafts and highly valued nationally.
The Market presents a complete sample of guilds, which includes jet, leather, wood carving, weaving, embossing, jewellery, glass, stationery, painting, stone, etcetera.
And as for gastronomy, the public can enjoy organic and traditional products, such as bread, sausages, cheese, honey, jams, fruit and vegetables, among many others.
As part of its commitment to solidarity, the Artisan Market also offers a range of products from cooperatives in Southern countries that respect the social and environmental conditions of the countries of origin.
