The El Bollo Festival in Avilés is the perfect culmination of the Easter festivities in Avilés, also known as Villa del Adelantado in clear reference to the illustrious figure of Don Pedro Menéndez, sailor and founder of the first city in the United States.
The festival takes place on Easter Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, there is a parade of floats and folk groups, and on Monday, after the mass at San Nicolás de Bari and the corresponding proclamation, there is a massive communal meal in the streets of the Old Town of Avilés. The truth is that there is nothing quite like it in all of Asturias: thousands of people seated to enjoy various Asturian delicacies, with one of the most important Historic Centers in Spain as the backdrop.
By the way, the festival gets its name from the "bollo" or cake given by the godparents to their godchildren on Easter Sunday.
