It rises to the south of Puerto de la Cerezal in Somiedo, crossing the council of Belmonte de Miranda from south to north.

It is the main tributary of the Narcea, joining it at Oviñana. Of the streams that join it on the right and left, the most notable is the Puerto stream, which joins it on the right and comes from the Puerto de Somiedo.
The Pigüeña is a trout river, with the presence of salmon, as this species finds in this river the clean, oxygenated waters it needs to complete its life cycle.
