Bustio is one of the calmest seaside villages in all of Asturias. Its unique geography, nestled in a bend of the Tinamayor Estuary – a natural border between Asturias and Cantabria – gives it an always serene atmosphere, as if time and space have stood still, a sense of eternal tranquility.
In this small and peaceful village, nestled among mountains in the municipality of Ribadedeva, you'll be surprised by the mouth of the Cares-Deva River, a natural passage for migratory birds from Northern Europe to warmer areas during the colder months. To delve into the history of the fauna and flora of this area, we recommend the Interpretation and Birdwatching Center of the Tinamayor Estuary, an educational space promoted by the local fishermen. Additionally, there's a charming fishing port nestled beneath the Cañón Peak.
Another interesting suggestion is to savor fresh seafood like pixín (monkfish) or bream in any of the restaurants in Bustio, while enjoying a stroll amidst buildings with Indian architecture, such as "Villa Delfina", very close to the old iron bridge that connected Asturian and Cantabrian lands.
Bustio is the easternmost gateway to Asturias, and precisely due to its location right beside an estuary that flows into the Cantabrian Sea, it has had a strong connection to the Camino de Santiago along the coast.
Thus, this ancient village is not only tied to the sea but also to the Camino de Santiago, and it's almost mountainous too, as you can already catch glimpses of the winds and high peaks of the Picos de Europa mountains just a few kilometers away.
With its winding and beautiful estuary, nearby beaches, untamed sea, secluded harbor, pilgrims on the Camino, and mountains surrounding it, Bustio is a unique blend that makes it truly special.
