Luarca/Ḷḷuarca

According to a very popular and deeply rooted saying, Luarca/Ḷḷuarca is the white village of the green coast, and the first thing that will catch your attention is that white is the predominant colour when you take a general look at this illustrious village. It is undoubtedly the whitest of all the Asturian coast.

If you arrive in Luarca/Ḷḷuarca through the Viḷḷar area, its Indian houses offer you a tour of the residences of those Asturians who emigrated to the Indies and returned with fortune. Walking along the watchtower, you will see where the locals used to gather to light fires and guide ships before the lighthouse was built on the point of Focicón in 1862.

You can also admire its cemetery, on a hill, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain for its spectacular views of the sea and where the remains of Nobel Prize winner Severo Ochoa, the father of modern genomics, rest. Nearby is the Mesa de Mareantes, where ancient sailors debated the advisability of going out to sea depending on the inclement weather.

Other discoveries include the fishermen's quarter El Cambaral, or the Parque de la Vida, where you can learn more about the planet Earth, space and the sea on a route of almost two kilometres.

The Fonte Baixa gardens, considered to be the largest private botanical garden in Spain, are another of the great attractions of this terraced town, which rises up between natural promontories and forms a dreamlike landscape.

Famous for its bridges and also for the legend of some of them, such as the Kissing Bridge - which features two lovers - Luarca/Ḷḷuarca invites you to watch the boats come and go and to enjoy its restaurants by the sea.

This is the Villa Blanca. It is crossed by the river Negro, with beautiful beaches and an important fishing port and marina, but above all, it is a seafaring town with a long tradition and one of the liveliest on the Asturian coast. Not in vain does it celebrate two unmissable events in August: the fiestas of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and San Timoteo, both declared to be of Tourist Interest.
