Just twenty meters above sea level, this small fishing village on the western coast, in the municipality of Coaña, was born with the homes of the fishermen nestled on the slopes of a small valley that merges with the Cantabrian Sea.
Its tradition comes from whale hunting and lobster fishing, a trade that occupied several generations for centuries. After years of mooring on a flat rock battered by the sea, the picturesque port of El Ribeiro was built. Therefore, Ortigueira is a very ancient enclave, which began its development in the Middle Ages and has a history of work and struggle as a whaling port.
Immerse yourself in the charms of its traditional houses imbued with a maritime spirit, and at the top, in the buildings of Indian architecture – as many of its inhabitants sought fortune in America – all with sea views. In this regard, Quinta Jardón is a must-visit, a symbol of progress driven by this benefactor family of the town since the 19th century, and it boasts one of the best-preserved French-influenced gardens in the Principality.
Therefore, the first impression upon arriving in Ortigueira is that of being in a remote, different, tranquil place, with an unbeatable ocean panorama where the maritime essence is palpable. To such an extent that, as you will see, it is a town and a port open to the vastness of the Cantabrian Sea like few others. Perched on slopes that descend into the sea, Ortigueira offers an unparalleled stroll and an unforgettable immersion in maritime life.
You can enjoy a beautiful walk to its two lighthouses, which are a marvel. On one hand, the old one, with the uniqueness of functioning with a solar valve, and the modern one. Moreover, the old one still holds the bell, which used to ring when ships passed by the coast.
You will also be drawn to its chapel, and the monument to the deceased sailors will touch your heart. It is simple yet striking, and in a way, it represents the indomitable and brave spirit of the inhabitants of this place that will not leave you indifferent.
And after all of this, if you're up for it, you can take a trip to the Castro de Coaña!
