It is the only Asturian port with an imperial character and which forms part of the imperial routes of Charles V in Europe. This charming little port, located in the vicinity of the Villaviciosa estuary, was the first port that Emperor Charles V visited on his first trip to the Peninsula, in September 1517.

This historical event, recreated by the locals every August, in an event that has been declared of Tourist Interest, has forever marked the life of this seafaring town with a long whaling tradition and where both national and foreign ships docked.

Many chronicles and commentaries have been written about this episode over the five centuries that were celebrated in 2017, but they all coincide in pointing out how surprised and captivated the emperor was by those people and that dreamlike landscape.

The catches that arrive at the port of Tazones are auctioned at its fish market, so it is easy to enjoy delicious fish and seafood in its restaurants and cider bars, scattered throughout the picturesque narrow streets that make up its two neighbourhoods, San Miguel and San Roque, declared a Historic-Artistic Site.

At low tide, you can look for dinosaur footprints along the coastline, and also visit the lighthouse area, one of the best preserved on the Asturian coast.

Tazones, in the council of Villaviciosa, is still today that hidden and friendly village that captivated the heart of a young emperor. Its neighbourhoods of old fishermen's houses, colourful and with aromas of the sea, its unique corners such as the Casa de las Conchas, its lively restaurants and terraces offering exquisite Cantabrian delicacies, its lively atmosphere, make this fishing village a unique place to which you will always want to return.
