This cave has an archaeological site and preserves some graphic manifestations that cannot be visited. The visit is exclusively to the geological formations, therefore, visits to La Cuevona are exclusively of geological interest.
La Cuevona de Ardines is part of the Tito Bustillo cave system and, possibly, the eastern sector of the Tito Bustillo cave was accessed through it, but a landslide thousands of years ago made the connection between the two difficult. The main room of the Cuevona is a circular floor plan about eighty metres in diameter, with conical walls whose apex is torn and lets in natural light from a height of 70 metres.
It is notable for the considerable size of its main room, where the ceiling reaches a height of 40 metres, now perforated by a natural hole that allows daylight to pass through. The cave has been known since ancient times for its beauty and spectacular appearance, enhanced by the skylight, and was also explored archaeologically in early times.
The excavations carried out in the Cuevona at the end of the 19th century were among the first of their kind in the Cantabrian region.
