Stage 1: Casquita - La Pola Siero 21.6 Kms

Frequent detour on the coastal road to approach Oviedo/Uviéu, to visit the Cathedral of San Salvador and the relics and treasures of the Holy Chamber. The change of direction is made in the council of Villaviciosa, on the way to Gijón/Xixón, in Casquita (at the fork of the chapel of San Blas), 3 kilometres after passing Villaviciosa. Two visits of great interest are in this area: the church of San Juan de Amandi (12th century), one of the most unique and representative Romanesque churches in Asturias. And, in the valley of Valdediós, the Cistercian monastery of Santa María, founded in 1200, next to the small and marvellous pre-Romanesque temple of San Salvador, known as the Conventín and consecrated in 893. Cross the river Valdediós and continue to Camoca.

From here to La Riega and Castiellu. La Brimera, La Venta, San Pedru Ambás, the slopes of Mount Lloses and Arbazal are the milestones of the route almost up to the Alto La Campa, which offers magnificent panoramic views over the peaceful valley of Sariego, watered by the river Nora. The descent to Figares and the road to La Carcavá mark out the route until reaching Vega, capital of the Sariego council, where there are Romanesque churches linked to the Way and where a pilgrims' hostel is also open. Attention should be paid to the Camino's own signposting.

Take the SR-1 towards La Pola Siero, passing first through La Venta, Barbechu, La Torre, El Romeru, El Castro, Aveno, La Venta, Vega, El Rayu and El Rebollal. El Rayu is the origin of a long tradition of pottery that began in the early 18th century and has since disappeared. In La Pola Siero, the road passes in front of the parish church.
