Description -

A frequently chosen detour on the coastal route to visit Oviedo, the Cathedral of San Salvador and the relics and treasures of the Holy Chamber. In the borough of Villaviciosa, you change direction in Casquita (at the fork by the Chapel of San Blas), 3 kilometres past Villaviciosa on the way to Gijón/Xixón. There are two really interesting visits to be made at this spot: the Church of San Juan de Amandi ( 12th C.), a unique church quite representative of Asturian Romanesque; and, in the Valdedios Valley, the Cistercian Monastery of Santa María, founded in 1200, next to the small, yet wonderful Pre-Romanesque Church of San Salvador, known as El Conventín (little convent), consecrated in 893. The trail crosses the River Valdedios and continues on to Camoca, and from there to La Riega and Castiellu. La Brimera, La Venta, San Pedru Ambás, Mount Lloses hillside and Arbazal are the milestones on the road until almost reaching Alto La Campa, which offers magnificent views over the peaceful Sariego Valley, watered by the River Nora. The walk down to Figares and the path to La Carcavá mark the route until reaching Vega, borough capital of Sariego, home to Romanesque churches linked to the Way of St James and where there is also a hostel for pilgrims. You need to pay attention to special signposting for the Way here.
