Description -

The Way of St James in the town passes through the district of La Fuente, heads halfway up the hill to Las Canteironas and continues on from there until reaching the old Piedratecha staging post, at an elevation of 800 m.

The route heads straight downhill through a wood to the monastery of Santa María la Real de Obona, an inescapable visit for pilgrims, as the monastery was bound to accommodate them by provision of Alfonso IX (included in the first town charter of Asturias, issued to Tineo in 1222). Obona was tremendously important as a hostel and place for meditation and reflection, as well as safeguarding numerous artworks, now lost, except for a Romanesque Christ carved in wood, with a very gentle expression.

You have to retrace your steps a little from the monastery, crossing Obona Stream and heading uphill through the wood to the houses in Villaluz (there is a fountain). The route merges with the road, which leads to Vega del Rey, Berrugoso, Campiello and El Fresno, with its chapel consecrated to Mary Magdalene. At the top of El Espín, the road branches off either towards Bárcena -which houses the Monastery of San Miguel, founded in 973- or left towards Borres, where the pilgrim hostel is located.
