The basilica, built in the 17th century, is one of the best examples of Asturian Baroque architecture. It is located in the town of Cangas del Narcea, next to the suspension bridge, one of the symbols of the town, and the weekly market is located around it.
Santa María Magdalena has a single nave plan, with three side chapels on each side and a square chancel with three apses, the central one being larger than the side ones.
On the outside, it has a beautiful interplay of volumes, with the transept standing out in height, which covers the dome inside.
The main façade is structured into a central body and two side towers with a square section. The towers are crowned with two turrets, under which the semicircular openings for the bells are located.
In the centre of the façade, on a projecting body, there is a large door with a round arch, surrounded by mouldings. Above the lintel is a niche topped with a ball pediment. The entire front of the doorway is covered with another pediment with a coat of arms in its centre. Above this, a railing joins the two towers, and an impost runs underneath it, emphasising the interior height.
Inside, both the nave and the chapels are covered with lunette vaults. The transept is covered with a stone dome. The coats of arms of Queipo de Llano and Queipo-Valdés are located on two of the pendentives of the dome.
