Its entrails carry the sap of the best Asturian carboniferous. It was a pioneering territory in the deepening of the first mining shafts in Asturias and, nowadays, the castles of historical mines such as Pumarabule, Mosquitera, Candín or Solvay, among others, still look like metal giants, which today make up the Siero mining route. But this council - with its capital in La Pola Siero - is not only famous for the black coal. Its green and fruitful mountains and valleys make it a great ecological larder of livestock, milk, garden produce and pomaradas, which make Siero the third municipality in Asturias with the most llagares (cider presses).
The enlightened Jovellanos, with family roots in Valdesoto, was inspired by Siero to begin his mining journey; thousands of pilgrims take their last steps in Siero before prostrating themselves before San Salvador in Oviedo/Uviéu and dozens of medieval lordships gathered in this territory, due to the strategic location and importance it had for the Crown, and their coats of arms and palaces still survive today, the same ones that the traveller can see on the Route of the Rural Palaces?
As if this were not enough, there is a traditional, festive, friendly and communicative Siero that enjoys showing its festivities to locals and foreigners alike: the Comadres evening, the Huevos Pintos market, the Romería del Carmín or the Carroces de Valdesoto..., or that vibrates every Tuesday with its weekly market and its livestock market, which continues to be a pioneer and leader in Spain.
