Famous for having one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Asturias, those of Oneta, which can be reached after a good stretch of road that makes for an accessible and entertaining route, Villayón is a council dotted with mountains and valleys, and whose hydrological orography is marked by the rivers Polea and Navia, the latter being its natural border with neighbouring municipalities.
Water and mountains are the hallmarks of Villayón, whose Sierra de Carondio mountain range is one of the most beautiful landscapes for enjoying nature activities. Like the other municipalities in western Asturias, the predominant colour in its towns and villages is the black of slate, a native material that abounds thanks to the fact that the geological period that outcrops in this part of Asturias is mainly the Silurian. Like the rest of its 'partners' in the Navia Historical Park, the archaeological remains of castreños and those of burial mounds and necropolises form part of its cultural heritage, which also has in its numerous emblazoned mansions an exponent of what was the 'rural splendour' around the Navia basin.
