Holy Week

Holy Week in Avilés is of vital importance. The quintessential medieval city of Asturias passionately celebrates Holy Week, a tradition that dates back to the distant 17th century, although the form it has taken in modern times emerged in the first half of the 20th century.

The setting of the historic city center is unparalleled for the staging of the rituals and processions of Holy Week. The passage of the religious floats through the old streets lined with arcades, squares, churches, palaces, and other well-preserved noble buildings, representing architectural styles ranging from the 12th century to the present day, transforms the city into a perfect stage of culture, history, and devotion.

Thousands of members of different brotherhoods take to the streets, each with their own guild, and dozens of floats, processions, and images flood the ancestral and historical Avilés. The entire city vibrates upon its stones, which exude a passionate past and present.
