It is located in the central area of Asturias, sheltered by the mountains of the Valles Mineros. The Cuencas Mineras Protected Area is made up of the Navaliego and Longalendo mountain ranges and the Urbiés range, in the Turón valley.
The action of the atmospheric agents, especially water, has created this unique landscape full of valleys and river networks that cross it and provide their flows to the river Turón.
Due to their beauty and location, the valleys and slopes of the Cuencas Mineras have become a popular destination for lovers of hiking and mountain routes.
Plant life
The vegetation of the deciduous forest consists mainly of oak, beech, chestnut and birch trees. The beech and chestnut trees are the absolute protagonists of the vegetation. In the undergrowth, holly appears in patches of some extent, accompanied by hazelnut trees. The rest of the territory is covered by a mosaic of floral units adapted to the different altitude, humidity, etc. conditions. The meadows scattered along the slopes characterise a farming activity that had a certain splendour in times gone by. The juicy meadows are converted into crops around the villages and at the bottom of the valley.
Wildlife
The wooded slopes provide shelter for the most diverse species, bearing in mind, moreover, that these mountains constitute the natural "corridor" of the Redes Natural Park. Roe deer and wild boar stand out among the large mammals, as well as birds of prey that find refuge in its forests. The list extends to the great variety of fauna that populates the sheltered valleys of the Central Asturian Region.
Of the different species of reptiles and amphibians catalogued in the region, more than half are represented in this territory.
The Cuencas Mineras Protected Landscape encompasses the high areas of the valleys of the municipalities of Mieres, Langreo, Laviana and San Martín del Rey Aurelio around Peña Mea (1,560 metres), the highest point of the protected area.
