  • From Cuadonga/Covadonga, the lake is reached after a 10-km hike along a road rising 680 m in elevation, with a slope of close to 7%.
    To access the lake in the summer, enquire as to public transport to the Lakes of Covadonga.

  • Plant life

    The Lakes of Covadonga were subjected to successive wildlife re-population, of which there are still some examples of tench (Tinca tinca), crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes phoxinus), trout (Salmo trutta fario) and minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus).

    The fish introduced into the lakes feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates, especially larvae of dragonflies (Odonata), caddisflies (Trichoptera), small crustaceans and beetles (Coleoptera), although the trout also feed on minnows, which in turn, are their competitors.


    In Lake Enol there exists a small number of charophytes on the shore, emergent plants barely grow and the supralittoral zone is very small with sparse moist-soil vegetation.

This lake is at an elevation of 1,070 m between Pico Mosquital (1,268 m), Porra de Enol (1,274 m) and Cerro de Sobornín (1,183 m). The environment is one of semi-mountainous, rugged landscape, more appropriate for practising hiking than for admiring.

The lake is emerald green in colour, being darker in summer than in winter. Its depth permits thermal stratification of the water during the summer and part of the autumn, forming three layers in the body of water: a warmer and less dense surface layer, with very little temperature variation; an intermediate layer, in which the temperature decreases rapidly with depth, with a higher density which prevents its waters from mingling with those of the surface layer; and, finally, a third layer of colder, denser waters located in the deepest areas.

The thermal stratification disappears in late autumn, the waters of the three layers mixing together.
