Castro - puente de Pousabadelle - Caraduxe - Santalla

Castro - Santalla 19,4

The last stage of the GR begins in Castro, in the council of Grandas de Salime, and runs northeast along the slopes of Mount Marón and the valley of the river Agüeira, Site of Community Importance (SCI) Cuenca del Agüeira, to Santa Eulalia de Oscos, capital of the council of the same name. From Castro, we can also do part of the stage along an alternative route that heads south to La Coba, where it joins the main route.

The important ethnographic role of the region of Los Oscos, the active conservation of its popular architecture and traditions, and the great variety of landscape units that make up this area, together with the important river valleys that form its backbone, have made it possible to declare its entire territory a Biosphere Reserve of the River Eo, Oscos and Terras de Burón.

Beginning the stage in Castro, the first section of the main route leaves the village on the right and descends along a dirt track through pastures, first, and then through radiata pine forests(Pinus radiata). The forest track descends for a long zig-zagging stretch to the wooden bridge over the Caballos river, and a little later, skirting the hillside, it reaches the stone bridge of Pousabadelle (14th century). The route crosses the river Agüeira and zigzags upwards along a well-trodden stone path.

Shortly after ascending along the forest track through a pine forest of radiata pine, the path takes a detour to the right, leaving the track, and climbs along a path. The rest of the route follows the slopes of Mount Marón in a contour line, up to the cemetery of A Coba, along a stretch that offers fantastic views of the Agüeira river valley.

From the cemetery we follow Coba until we reach the road, where we turn right and leave it before reaching a bend, descending along the path on the left that leads us to the village of Coba, where we pass over the village, to take the path that runs northwards along the slopes of Mount Marón, populated by conifers and leafy trees and, after several kilometres, reaches the recreational area of Ferreira. From here we turn right towards the houses of Talladas, which we leave on the right and continue along a path that ascends until we reach a hill and then descend towards a stream where we continue to the left and reach Caraduxe. From here we follow the track first and then the road until we reach Santa Eulalia de Oscos.

Another way to reach La Coba is via the alternative route that starts to the left of the youth hostel in Castro, and then continues along the road to Trabada. From this point, the alternative route ascends through this village along a dirt track, between meadows, and skirts the slopes above the river Agüeira in an easterly direction. In this part of the route we can clearly see the main route of the GR on the hillside, on the other side of the river, as well as the rural village of ACoba, where we are heading.

The last part of the alternative route zig-zags down a forest track that runs through pine woods, crosses the Agüeira river and climbs up to A Coba, from where it joins the main route to continue to Santa Eulalia de Oscos.
