Grandas - Robledo - Valdedo - Castro

Grandas de Salime - Castro 10,4

The GR begins in Grandas, capital of the council of Grandas de Salime, and heads west to the rural village of Castro, in the vicinity of which is the Chao de Samartín, a Celtic castro built in the 8th century BC, and which is one of the most valuable remaining testimonies in the area of these ancient prehistoric cities that occupied the northwest of the peninsula, some of which survived after the arrival of the Romans.

The history of the council is also linked to the Middle Ages and the Primitive Way of St. James, as the last Asturian section of the ancient Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela runs through these lands, crossing the municipality from east to west to enter Galicia via the Alto del Acebo.

Beginning the stage in Grandas, take a path that starts to the left of the start-finish signpost, located on the left-hand side of the AS-14 road as you enter Grandas. A few metres from the start, the path turns off to the right, leaving the end of the previous stage to the left.

The route continues for several metres along a stone and earth path, between pines and oaks, until the path begins to widen, becoming a track for wheeled access. At the beginning of this track we will walk through pine woods, paying special attention to the directional signs so as not to take the wrong turns, and then continue through meadows and pastures, enjoying beautiful views of the Navia river.

The route then joins the road and, a few metres after passing the rural village of Robledo, turns to the right along a dirt track until it reaches a crossroads where the route offers two options for continuing. Taking the left-hand option, the route follows a narrow path through meadows and copses of hardwoods towards the village of Valdedo. Choosing the route to the right, the route continues along a dirt track until it comes out onto the road that descends to the village of Cereijeira, from where, turning left through a tunnel under the main road, we also reach Valdedo.

From the latter village, the route continues along a gravel and gravel track, leaving the village of San Julián to the right, until reaching the rural village of Castro, the final destination of the stage. Once in Castro, continuing the path straight on, we can reach the aforementioned Chao Samartín.
