The Ortigueira seafaring route reveals the maritime landscape of the western coast of Asturias. A route that runs through the town from its most modern part to the most traditional, passing through the small fishing port that it hides in its interior. The first stop will be at the lighthouse and chapel of San Agustín, where we can enjoy a view of the sea on the horizon and the steep cliffs that dot the coastline of this area.
Further on we can discover the village, walking through its intricate streets in a labyrinth of stairways that reveal the small terraced gardens of the oldest houses in the area, and also the port, hidden between two cliffs that drop steeply into the sea, like stone waterfalls.
This route takes us to a picturesque fishing village, worthy of a novel, where its landscapes are almost as charming as the local people.
Ortigueira (Coaña) - Las Llamosas (Coaña) 3,7
The route begins at the entrance to the town of Ortigueira, in the park next to the Casa de la Cultura de Coaña. The path takes us through the village and its coastal plain to the other end, where it joins the Senda Costera E-9. We start the route passing in front of the Casa de la Cultura and turning into the first street we find on the right.
After 200 metres, turn left at the next street, passing in front of the Municipal Library, and following the right-hand side of the street you will come to the San Agustín lighthouse.
About six hundred metres further on, we will find an information panel on the route, and a little further on, a viewpoint from where we can see the sea, the cliffs and the beaches of the west coast, which are to the east.
When we reach kilometre 1.12, we will find the lighthouse and the chapel of San Agustín, as well as two squares: one, on one side of the chapel, with a boat as its central axis, and the second square, in front of the lighthouse, which contains a wall with a prayer for the victims of maritime accidents. Our path continues along the street closest to the cliff, which once again leads us into the village.
At kilometre 1.40, we must follow this street straight on until we reach a large red house, which is a restaurant, and seven hundred metres further on we come to a square with a bust in the middle. This bust was commissioned by the villagers in honour of a deceased local character, who apparently donated large sums of money to the village for civil works. Just in front of the square we find a picturesque mansion.
Once past the aforementioned red house, at approximately kilometre 2.3, turn right around it to continue the descent towards the Ortigueira pass. Three hundred metres further on, at the crossroads, we must take the path to the left, and then go down a flight of steps towards the port. Once down the stairs, we find a fountain coming out of a wall on the right hand side.
At kilometre 3, we are at the quay of Ortigueira, a simple fishing port with a cetárea and few boats. Enclosed between the cliffs, this port has great charm. Once we have enjoyed the sea breeze, we must turn back and take the first street we see on the right, plunging into a labyrinth of narrow stairs that we must climb following the route's markings (it is well indicated).
When you reach the top of the stairs, kilometre 3.4, you will come to two crossroads in a row. At the first one we must continue straight on, turning right at the second one.
All that remains is to continue along the route until you reach the end of the route, some 300 metres from the first crossroads. At this point the route ends, with an information panel on the Coastal Path with which it joins.
