PR213
Between San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño, Sobrefoz and Abiegos there are two river valleys that join and give rise to a larger valley, that of Ponga, which is covered by this beautiful route that visits the three villages between forests and rivers.
These paths, undoubtedly an ancient communication route between these villages, go through mixed woodland, riverside and chestnut woods with black blueberry trees, and cross the course of the river Ponga over a natural rock bridge. Among all the vegetation that can be seen, we can see the strawberry trees, as well as some heaths that give colour to the clearings of the continuous green.
A stop at the viewpoint will allow us to enjoy a view of almost the entire route, of the villages of Abiegos, Cainava and San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño, before returning to immerse ourselves in the lushness of the valley floor. A beautiful and easy route to get to know the heart of Ponga.
San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño - San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño 10,2
This beautiful and simple route, which visits three villages, opens up between two river valleys that join and give rise to a larger valley, that of Ponga. It joins the villages of San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño, Yanu, Sobrefoz and Abiegos, and starts at the interpretation centre of the first of these, which can be reached via the AS-261 from Cangues d'Onís/Cangas de Onís, where we can leave our car.
The route starts along a concrete path located just behind the centre, about 100 metres away. The route is perfectly signposted at all times with yellow and white PR markings, making it almost impossible to get lost.
After approximately 400 metres, we pass next to an old washing place and continue along the path that turns to the left to continue down towards the river Ponga. The concrete soon gives way to a dirt track surrounded by mixed woodland, riverside woods and centenary chestnut trees.
We continue along the path without encountering any significant slopes. When we have walked the first three kilometres of the route, we pass a bridge over the river Ponga, where we can see a small waterfall between the two villages. There is also a sign indicating Sobrefoz on the left and Abiegos on the right. We take the turning on the left.
About 500 metres further on, we reach the village of Yanu. If we wish, we can continue along the PO-3 road upwards and climb up to enjoy Sobrefoz. We return back, again along the initial path, to the point where the signpost was. A kilometre further on we come to a crossroads, where we take the path to the right, which goes towards Abiegos. It is a path that runs through the forest.
At about kilometre 6, we shall have to cross a wooden footbridge to reach the road that connects Abiegos with Sobrefoz, the PO-3, which has very little traffic.
Before entering the village there is a viewpoint. Once we reach Abiegos, the next kilometre further on, at the first crossroads we see, we turn right, and a few metres further on, again to the right, we find the path that will take us back to San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño.
At kilometre 7 of the route, we turn right and, as we continue down the path, we come across abandoned stables. After about 800 metres, we see a bridge, which we will have to cross, and very close by is the old Fábrica de la Luz, an emblematic place that once supplied electricity to the surrounding villages. We continue along the path.
After about 8.5 kilometres, the path back to San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño turns to the left and becomes a little steep. We will have to follow it until we reach the village.
One kilometre further on, we arrive back at the starting point, San Xuan/San Juan de Beleño, the end of our route. To rest, we can enter the interpretation centre to enjoy the extensive and interesting information about the area, with a wide variety of exhibitions.
