Amountainous territory if ever there was one, Cabrales is in the vigorous heart of the Picos de Europa, as a large part of its territory forms the Central Massif of the Picos. There are many milestones in the form of summits and feats that we can highlight in Cabrales, but there is above all one that marks this land, the Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes, the last conquest among the great European peaks, back in 1904, and which during the 20th and 21st centuries has continued to inspire great challenges. Cabrales thus joins its history to that of mythical names in exploration and climbing such as Pedro Pidal and El Cainejo - the pioneers - and so many others...some of whom even give their names to viewpoints such as Pedro Udaondo in Asiegu...And more names, this time of villages with views or with high mountain atmosphere and habits such as Pandiellu, Camarmeña, or Bulnes - with funicular railway included -, Tielve, Sotres or Poncebos... not forgetting the Cares Route and the river that gives it its name.
In addition to the great icons of limestone rock such as Urriellu, Horcados Rojos, Cabrones, Torrecerredo, there is also one that has to do with the livestock and grazing tradition of this land, and is the other that makes it universally known: Cabrales cheese, which even has a Cave-Exhibition in Arenas, and a busy festival.
