Navelgas is a village in the municipality of Tineo, in the westernmost heart of Asturias, which somehow embodies the most traditional and magical atmosphere of Asturian villages. That's why it's no coincidence that one of the most genuine festivals about rural traditions in Asturias related to autumn is celebrated there.
The Esfoyón and Amagosto Festival accurately portrays the "esfoyones" of the past, in which the villagers would gather at a house to husk or "esfoyar" the corn from that family and then help them string and hang it on the balconies.
These gatherings were a social event where people of all ages would socialize, sing, and the younger ones would court each other. The "esfoyaza" became a big celebration where stories, legends, and traditions were shared, as the work didn't take away energy for the festivities and songs.
Currently, the Esfoyón festival begins at dusk in the neighborhood of Navelgas de Arriba, which is completely decorated for the occasion. The streets are covered with straw and illuminated with torches, and all the villagers dress in traditional clothes and prepare delicious dishes such as "frixuelos" (Asturian pancakes), chestnuts, corn cakes, stuffed rolls, freshly skimmed lard, etc.
Furthermore, different artisans - woodworkers, basket weavers, blacksmiths, etc. - set up their demonstrations under the "paneras" (typical Asturian raised granaries) and in the stables. Meanwhile, the younger ones distribute the "garutsa," homemade cherry liqueur, "orujo" (a strong alcoholic beverage), and drinks that help ward off the November cold since this festival always takes place in the first half of the month.
Throughout the night, the "panoya de oro" (golden ear) is awarded to a distinguished personality for their support of the festival and traditions.
This festival is undoubtedly an ideal opportunity to experience the most authentic rural traditions of Asturias.
