Esfoyón and Amagosto Festival. Tineo

Navelgas hosts the Esfoyón and Amagosto Festival, which recalls the old popular traditions so that young people can get to know them and the elderly can relive them.

The festival attempts to portray as accurately as possible the esfoyones of yesteryear, when the villagers would gather in a house to husk (esfoyar) the family's corn and then help them to husk it and hang it from the runners. These gatherings were a social event, where people of all ages would get together to chat, sing, and even the younger ones would take advantage of the occasion to court. The sphoyaza became a celebration where there was no lack of stories, legends, traditions, folixas and songs.

The Esfoyón begins at dusk, in the neighbourhood of Navelgas de Arriba, which is decorated for the occasion. The streets are covered with straw and lit with torches. The locals dress up in ancient costumes and the different Cultural Associations are in charge of preparing a variety of food (frisuelos, chestnuts, corn cakes, bollo preñao, freshly skimmed butter). The 'Panoya de Oro' award ceremony takes place, followed by tastings and children's activities. The youngsters hand out garutsa (homemade cherry anisette and orujo), coffee and freshly made cider to help them get through the cold November night. The ground floor of the bread bakeries and stables are occupied by local craftsmen who give a small demonstration of their work. Thus we can find the "madreñeiro", the "cesteiro", the "ferreiro", etc.

This event has been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Principality of Asturias.
