In order to protect the Picos de Europa National Park, an access plan to the Covadonga Lakes has been designed to ensure the sustainability of this unique enclave. This plan regulates access on peak days.

Access to Lagos de Covadonga

The only access authorised for private vehicles to access the Covadonga lakes is the CO-4 road. However, in order to ensure the sustainability of this unique enclave, during peak seasons a special public transport system is set up and access to private vehicles is prohibited 24 hours a day.

On what dates is access restricted?

At the moment, the dates of the Lagos de Covadonga Access Plan for 2025 are not yet available. As soon as they are confirmed, we will update this section with all the details about the special transport arrangements.

How to access during the restricted period?

Although private vehicles are authorised to access the Royal Site of Covadonga, it is recommended to use public transport to access both sites.

Where do I leave my vehicle?

There are a total of 4 car parks, one in Cangas de Onís and another 3 on the route between Cangues d'Onís/Cangas de Onís and Cuadonga/Covadonga.

The parking fee is the same in all of them, 2 €, and there is a bus stop in all of them.

What time do the buses leave and how long does the journey take?

The bus timetable varies according to the time of year.

23 March - 30 September

  • First service: 8:00h
  • Last service up: 17:45h

01 October - 9 December

  • First service: 8:00h
  • Last service up: 16:00h
  • Last service down: 19:05h

You can start the route at the bus station in Cangues d'Onis/Cangas de Onís or at one of the car parks along the route (El Bosque, Muñigo and El Repelao).

Where do I buy tickets and how much do they cost?

Tickets can be purchased through the platform set up(opens in a new tab) by the transport company for this purpose.

Exceptionally, and if there are places available, tickets may be purchased at the points of sale set up in the car parks of the plan, although it is recommended that tickets are purchased in advance.

Fares

  • Adult ticket: 9 €.
  • Children between 3 and 12 years old: 3,50 €.
  • Children under 3 years free.

Can I stop to visit the Sanctuary of Covadonga?

Yes, travellers who wish to take advantage of the day to visit the Royal Site of Covadonga can do so on their return from the lakes. The ticket purchased to go up to the lakes is valid on the shuttles that connect the Sanctuary with the car parks.

This service, with 26 daily frequencies, will operate every 30 minutes in both directions, from 7:40 am to 8:00 pm.

Can I access Covadonga in my car?

Yes, but remember that the capacity of the Cuadonga/Covadonga car park is very limited, so it is preferable to use public transport. The cost of a single ticket for this service is €1.55 and the ticket can be purchased in advance on the platform provided by the transport company(opens in a new tab) or at the Cangas de Onís bus station.

Can I access the lakes with a pet?

The buses have a free space for dogs in the luggage compartment. All other pets must come in their own carrier and travel in the luggage compartment. Animals are not allowed to run loose in the national park.

Do I have any alternative if I travel with a dog and I don't want to put it in the luggage compartment of the bus?

Yes, in addition to buses you can hire a taxi service.

  • The taxi company, Taxitur(opens in a new tab), allows animals in their vehicles. They will travel in the back of the vehicle on a leash, one per vehicle and only in the 8-seater vehicles.

    When the plan is active, Taxitur provides the service from Cuadonga/Covadonga. From there you leave in shared 8-seater taxis which are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations are made and the price is 12 €/per person, you can stay at the Lakes as long as you want until 19:00 h maximum. Telephone 985 848 797.

Can I access the lakes by bicycle?

Yes, bicycles are not affected by these restrictions.

Can I access the lakes in a private vehicle if I have reduced mobility?

Yes, vehicles with duly accredited reduced mobility can access the road to the lakes on presentation of the vehicle parking card at the Covadonga barrier, provided they are not motorhomes or vehicles over 5 metres in length (in this case they cannot access the CO-04 road while the restrictions are in force).

Can I access the lakes if I have a reservation to eat in one of the restaurants around Enol and Ercina lakes?

No, a reservation in a restaurant does not justify access to the lakes by private vehicle.

Can I access the lakes if I have a reservation in a refuge?

Yes, when you make your booking you will be asked to indicate the vehicle registration number in order to inform the park offices and authorise access, as long as they are not motorhomes or vehicles over 5 metres long (in this case they will not be able to access the CO-04 road while the restrictions are in force).
