The volley of Cangas del Narcea
Cangas del Narcea (Western Asturias) (Cangas del Narcea)
Festival of touristic interest in the Principality of Asturias
July 16th.
Nuestra Señora del Carmen. La Descarga
The grand homage to the Virgin in the form of gunpowder

The Virgen del Carmen is the Virgin who arouses most devotion in all of Asturias, and not only on the coastal strip – she is the patroness of sailors -, but also inland. One example is Cangas del Narcea. Every July 16 the town of Cangas literally vibrates with the famous Volley. At about eight o'clock in the evening that day just when the float with the Virgin crosses the old bridge in order to steer towards her chapel, the sky above Cangas is filled with rocket fireworks for some minutes. The sky turns white and the intoxicating aroma of gunpowder spreads to every corner.

The sensation of the Volley is unique and indescribable. Only seeing it can you appreciate it fully. It is the eternal homage of the fraternities of Cangas to the Virgin and to those who are no longer with us, but, in a way, they return at that moment. At nightfall, the artistic, emotional midnight fireworks display puts the final touch to an emblematic fiesta which joins together three aspects: devotion, fun and art.
