Info
The Virgen del Carmen is one of the most popular devotions in Asturias, and not only on the coast - she is the patron saint of sailors - but also inland. Just one example: Cangas del Narcea. Every 16th July, the town of Cangas del Narcea literally vibrates with the famous "Descarga". At around eight o'clock in the evening on that day, and just as the procession of the Virgin crosses the old bridge to go to her chapel, the sky over Cangas del Narcea is flooded with fireworks and gunpowder for several minutes. The sky turns white, and the intoxicating aroma of gunpowder invades every corner.
The sensation of the Discharge is unique and indescribable, and only by experiencing it can it be fully appreciated. It is the eternal homage of the peñas canguesas to the Virgin and to those who are no longer here, but somehow revive in that moment. As night falls, the artistic and heartfelt fireworks at midnight put the finishing touch to an emblematic fiesta that brings together the three aspects: Devotion, revelry and art.
