The Pilgrimage of the Martyr Saints of Valdecuna, honouring San Cosme and San Damián

These two saints were well versed in the medical and pharmaceutical sciences of their time and came from the east. They were called San Cosme and San Damián, and with the passage of time they gained the fame of being miracle-workers, this being how popular devotion and memory made the Pilgrimage of the Martyr Saints of Valdecuna, in Mieres, one of the most famous in Asturias.

Every 27th of September, the Valley of Cuna and Cenera fills with thousands of pilgrims wishing to attend the mass, to afterwards all settle down in the surroundings of the sanctuary and across the entire valley for an Asturian picnic in perfect harmony, always refreshed with the best cider.

"Asturianness", green devotion, an incredibly beautiful landscape, and non-stop fiesta. The Martyrs of Valdecuna are like this and, also, with a particularly singular note: the popular singer-songwriter from Mieres, Víctor Manuel, composed a well-known song inspired by this fiestas and entitled "La Romería". In this way it is the only pilgrimage in Asturias with a song by a singer-songwriter.
