They were two saints who had extensive knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical science of their time and came from the East. They were called Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian, and over time they gained a reputation for performing miracles, which led to the devotion and popular memory turning the Pilgrimage of the Holy Martyrs of Valdecuna, in Mieres, into one of the most famous in Asturias.
Every September 27th, the Valley of Cuna and Cenera fills with thousands of pilgrims ready to attend the mass, and afterwards, everyone settles in the vicinity of the sanctuary and throughout the valley to enjoy a traditional Asturian countryside meal in perfect harmony, accompanied by the finest cider.
Asturian culture, devotion in green, incredibly beautiful landscapes, and non-stop celebration. That's what the Martyrs of Valdecuna are all about, and they have a very unique feature: the popular singer-songwriter from Mieres, Víctor Manuel, composed a well-known song titled "La Romería" inspired by this festival. So it's the only pilgrimage in Asturias with an original song by an author.
