Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Luarca, the perfect example of a seafaring virgin in western Asturias

The Great Day of this fiesta is the great public holiday par excellence of Asturian summer: 15th August. The Virgen del Rosario represents de seafaring virgin, clearly portrayed in the procession in which her figure sails on a boat decorated for the occasion, accompanied by others similarly decorated. The procession, which commences with the launching of fireworks, becomes a tribute combining the devotion to the virgin with the memory of the fishermen who died at sea. All boats sound their sirens and throw flower bouquets and wreathes to the Cantabrian Sea as a deep-felt and emotive remembrance of those missing.

The days of fiesta are completed with many entertainment, sports, cultural and traditional activities linked to the sea, music and dancing, and culture, devised for kids and adults. Luarca, the capital of the Valdés district, these days becomes a true and warm destination to enjoy the fiesta along the western coast of Asturias.
