Holy Week

The Holy Week of Villaviciosa is one of the oldest in Asturias. Its celebration is already documented in the 17th century, and the truth is that the people of Maliayés have been passing down the tradition and spirit of Holy Week from generation to generation, commemorating each year a religious festival that also has a strong cultural and artistic component.

The entire town comes together to commemorate the Mysteries of the Passion and Death of Jesus of Nazareth, gladly expressing a tradition and sentiment inherited from their ancestors in a public manner.

The religious images displayed during the Holy Week of Villaviciosa hold high artistic value, and the celebrations, especially on Wednesday and Good Friday, are truly worth it because during those days one can witness the Encounter and the Descent from the Cross or Unnailing, which are true sacramental acts with great dramatic force.
