Info
It has established itself as a leading name in Gijón for crafts, gastronomy and tourism. The quality of its products is its main distinguishing feature and selling point, alongside the activities and workshops it has been organising since its inception sixteen years ago, which enable locals and tourists alike to experience Asturian culture and way of life in a participatory and educational way.
Located in the Plaza Mayor, right in the heart of Gijón/Xixón, it has become a much-anticipated hub for Asturian crafts, taking place on the second weekend of every month.
The Market takes place on the second weekend of every month in Gijón/Xixón, with the exception of Easter and the Constitution Day long weekend, when its usual date is adjusted to coincide with these public holidays due to the large influx of tourists visiting the city.
The market offers a very wide range of products, always distinguished by their high quality. Asturian craft pieces combine tradition and modernity. They are exclusive, unique, handmade following the techniques of traditional crafts, and highly valued nationwide.
The market showcases a comprehensive range of craft trades, including jet, leatherwork, woodcarving, weaving, embossing, jewellery, glasswork, stationery, painting, stonework, and so on.
As for gastronomy, visitors can enjoy organic and traditional produce, such as bread, cured meats, cheeses, honey, jams, fruit and vegetables, amongst many other items.
As part of its commitment to social solidarity, the Artisan Market also offers a range of products sourced from cooperatives in the Global South that respect the social and environmental conditions of their countries of origin.
As well as its quality and excellence, it stands out from other events due to the unique nature of the fact that the artisans themselves are responsible for organising it. The Artisan and Organic Market Association also works to delight visitors with new activities, exhibitions and workshops, aimed at bringing Asturian culture and traditions to the general public in a participatory, educational and enjoyable way.
