Info
On the 8th of September, the people of Langreo and its surroundings celebrate the big day of their council, and the chosen place is the Hermitage of El Carbayu. This is where the patron saint of the council is found, and that is why the most important country pilgrimage in Langreo is held there, in which the most representative elements of the typical Asturian festival are integrated: the traditional Asturian folklore costume, at the same time as the puya'l ramu and the meal in the prau with friends and family are celebrated.
The Virgin of El Carbayu symbolises the union between the villages and their people, and is a devotion of medieval origin. A curious fact is that her figure is located in a baroque altarpiece on a tree trunk, and according to legend the Virgin appeared centuries ago on an oak tree (carbayu in Asturian), and her wish was the construction of a temple in that specific place, from where the whole Valley of Langreo can be seen.
So legend, tradition and festivity go hand in hand in Langreo.
