Pozu Santa Bárbara was the first major coal mine in the Caudal basin and one of the largest mining pits in Asturias. It began to be deepened in the second decade of the 20th century by the Basque company Hulleras del Turón and was in operation until 1995. It was the first Asturian mine to be declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
