On the last Sunday of every August, Arenas dresses up to celebrate the contest of one of the best known and most famous cheeses in the world: Cabrales cheese. On this day, the people of Cabrales go all out, and locals and foreigners alike are eager to get to know all the cheeses competing and to enjoy the atmosphere of an Asturian festival that takes place there from early in the morning. The day is intense and tasty, and there is no shortage of bagpipe bands and folk groups.
Throughout the week there are different cultural and gastronomic events linked to cheese and its surroundings, ranging from tastings, visits to museums and caves, exhibitions, presentations, traditional market, ethnographic routes, bowling, folklore festival, exhibition of villagers' costumes, etc.
In short, it is a tribute to the culture of cheese and the social and natural environment in which it is produced. And in reality it is much more than a gastronomic festival. Undoubtedly one of the unmissable events in the Asturian summer.
