Here we suggest an itinerary of the best viewpoints on the central coast of Asturias, with the added advantage that most of them can be reached by car or on foot. They are ideal for those who, for various reasons, cannot or do not feel like walking considerable distances to fully enjoy the natural beauty of Asturias.
Let's start our tour!
Crow's Hill in Gijón
Although probably the best known viewpoint in Gijón is the one at Cape San Lorenzo, in Providencia, very close by is the viewpoint of La Colina del Cuervo, which offers magnificent views of the central Asturian coast. You can get there by following the Paseo del Cervigón or directly by car, with the advantage that there is a small car park right there, and a hotel that usually has a cafeteria and terrace open to the public.
The Archaeological-Natural Park of Campa Torres in Gijón
On the western flank of the bay of Gijón/Xixón is the Campa Torres Archaeological-Natural Park, where the largest fortified maritime enclosure of the entire Asturian coast was located in ancient times. Visits to the site are free and open to the public. From there you can also enjoy the coastal landscape of the neighbouring councils of Carreño and Gozón - to the west - and a splendid panoramic view of the city of Gijón/Xixón - to the east -. Inland, the views are also incredible: on clear days you can see the Picos de Europa and part of the Central Mountains.
The Lighthouse of Peñes in Gozón
The next viewpoint is located at the northernmost point of Asturias, in Peñes, in the council of Gozón. Bordering the Peñas Visitor Reception and Marine Environment Interpretation Centre, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Asturian coast. There is also a large car park and restaurant in the area. This lighthouse has been in operation since 1852.
Viewpoint of the Faro de Avilés lighthouse in Gozón
It is a privileged enclave for observing the coast, both to the east and to the west. The images of Salinas beach and the island of La Deva, for example, will captivate your retina. For your convenience, there is a car park in the area.
Viewpoint of the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum at Castrillón
This open-air museum is located in the council of Castrillón, and has a viewpoint on a promontory called "La Peñona", at the westernmost end of Salinas Beach. From here you can see the El Espartal Dunes Natural Monument.
Punta del Pozaco viewpoint in Soto del Barco
The Punta del Pozaco viewpoint is located near the mouth of the river Nalón, in the council of Soto del Barco, and has wonderful views. From there you can see the Bayas beach to the east and the Quebrantos beach to the west. To get there you have to climb a few steps.
Bayas viewpoint in Castrillón
In the council of Castrillón, and specifically at the easternmost end of Playón de Bayas - the longest sandy beach in Asturias -, on Cape Vidrias, there is a viewpoint which can be reached by taking a short walk along a flat asphalted track (a section that forms part of the route of the Senda Norte), and which also offers exceptional views.
