Easter Week in Avilés is of vital importance. The medieval city of Asturias par excellence celebrates Holy Week with passion and has done so since the distant 17th century, although this celebration as it has come down to us today took shape in the first half of the 20th century.
The setting of the historic centre of the city is unequalled for the staging and rituals of Holy Week. The processions pass through the ancient streets lined with arcades, squares, churches, palaces and other noble buildings, whose perfectly preserved architectural styles represent a journey from the 12th century to the present day, transforming the city into a perfect setting for culture, history and passion.
Thousands of brotherhoods take to the streets, each with their own brotherhood, and dozens of floats, processions and images flood the ancestral and historic Avilés. The whole city vibrates on its stones that ooze past and present passion.
And as a culmination of so much emotion, the end of the calendar of processions gives way to the Fiesta del Bollo, declared to be of National Tourist Interest, which takes place on Easter Monday. Undoubtedly, the best way to round off a unique Easter Week in Asturias and Spain.
