- Address Locality: El Carbayu
- Days Days: September 8th
- Type Type: Festival of Touristic Interest of the Principality of Asturias
On September 8th, the people of Langreo and its surrounding areas celebrate the main day of their municipality, and the chosen location is the Chapel of El Carbayu. There lies the patron saint of the municipality, and that is where the most important countryside pilgrimage of Langreo takes place, integrating the most representative elements of the typical Asturian festival: the traditional attire of Asturian folklore, along with the offering of the "puya'l ramu" (a religious offering) and a meal in the meadow with friends and family.
The Virgin of El Carbayu symbolizes the unity between the towns and their people, and it is an ancient medieval devotion. Interestingly, her figure is located on a baroque altarpiece on top of a tree trunk, as the legend goes that the Virgin appeared centuries ago on an oak tree (carbayu in Asturian), expressing her will to have a temple built in that specific location, which overlooks the entire Langreo Valley.
Thus, legend, tradition, and festivity come together in Langreo.
