Asturias or its thousand walking routes
Asturias has so many paths and trails to walk along that you could say that the whole of it is a landscape linked by hundreds of routes drawn and laid out, not only for communication since time immemorial, but also for the enjoyment of nature lovers, always ready to savour it over a slow fire.
For this reason, hiking in Asturias is within your reach, with trails of different levels of difficulty and varied landscapes. The possibilities are so wide-ranging and diverse that you would need a lifetime to hike Asturias from end to end..., and thus experience active tourism to the full.
Whatever route you choose, it will always have something to please you: a landscape with a forest or a river, with its stone or wooden bridges, its mills, its panoramic views of the mountains or the sea, its descent into a valley or its ascent to a summit...
To say hiking in Asturias is to lose yourself in a sea of routes, each one more interesting than the next. It means bathing in an ocean of greens and blues - those of the earth and the sky - and getting to know Asturian nature step by step, as the girl in the photo does on the Silence Route in Villanueva de Oscos.
The ideal land for a river expedition
Can you imagine a completely virgin river, with its crystalline waters, its green banks, its hidden corners, its lustrous trees on the banks... Well, it's not a dream, it's Asturias!
In the middle of any Asturian riverbed you will feel like the leader of an expedition to a land of untamed nature. It will be for you a new way of travelling, of observing nature, of reaching places that you cannot reach by any other means, of merging in an embrace with the flora and fauna of the place..., and in short, of enjoying active tourism.
And of course, it is an ideal way to improve your fitness and shake off the stress of everyday life, going into total relaxation "mode", lulled by the sound of water and birds, and occasionally caressed by the wind...
A perfect example of the purity of an Asturian river is the Polea - in the photo -, a tributary of the Navia and embedded in the heart of Western Asturias.
Adrenaline rushes in the ravine
Need to let off some adrenaline? Then don't think twice and don't do what you always do. In Asturias you are in the best place to unload those doses of adrenaline that make you feel so alive.
One of the active tourism activities that can help you in this task is canyoning. The truth is that canyoning requires all your concentration, and the different obstacles and natural steps will keep you in a healthy tension and attention. While you do this exercise in self-improvement, the backdrop is a natural landscape of extreme beauty, with its siphons, waterfalls, pools, caves...
In short, a whole spectacle in which you are the main artist, and you will see how adrenaline flows in the canyon, inside and outside of you!
All over Asturias, there are impressive canyons of different levels of difficulty. Today we have chosen one in western Asturias, specifically in Riofrío, in Boal.
To hallucinate with the bowels of the earth
Asturias, and especially its eastern region, is a land perforated by thousands of caves, grottoes, chasms and other cavities... This geological and scenic reality will provide us with a lot of opportunities to enjoy the secrets and mysteries that an ever-changing and surprising nature holds for us.
So one experience that we highly recommend is caving. Entering a cave -like this one in the photo in Teverga-, always with a good guide and the proper precautions, will become something unforgettable for you. You will be amazed by the entrails of the Asturian earth!
The art of climbing the walls
Climbing walls - for climbing - has always been a mixture of sporting courage, technique and artistic skills. If you have never climbed before, Asturias is the place for you, because there are many places where you can do it, some of them very complicated and others suitable for beginners. And all of them will please you deeply.
Although the greatest historical climbing tradition is to be found in the Picos de Europa area, in recent years destinations such as Quirós, and more recently Teverga, offer climbers and enthusiasts many attractions for the practice of a sport that is becoming more and more popular.
The art of climbing the walls will captivate you!
A high-flying sport
Surely at some point in your life you have dreamed of flying like a bird, letting yourself be carried away by the air currents. Tandem paragliding is one of those active tourism activities that will not leave you indifferent. You will fly very high, and you will fly over wonderful places and landscapes.
Paragliding will give you a different point of view of the Asturian land, its mountains, its valleys, its coast and its beaches. Just by looking at this image of the east coast of Gijón you will realise the possibilities of this sporting adventure.
It's a high-flying sport that will change your perception of this serenely beautiful territory!
Not without your horse
And what about a good horseback ride? Life on horseback is seen in a different way, and when we are talking about beautiful, well-preserved natural environments, I wouldn't even mention it.
The panoramic view provided by the horse will help you to enjoy the landscape even more, and to perceive some nuances that would otherwise escape you. When you ride, you won't want to get off, you won't want the route to end. You will be making sweet stops, on a path, on a hill, on the side of a mountain, at the foot of a river or a lake...
Paradise on two wheels
It is an indisputable fact that Asturias is a paradise to travel by any means of locomotion. And if, in addition, it is an ecological, non-polluting and sustainable means of transport such as the bicycle, well, that's just as well. Because it turns out that the bicycle is perfectly suited to the characteristics of the natural environment, to enjoy it to the full without damaging it.
There are many routes, landscapes, corners, villages, hamlets, etc., that you can discover and enjoy cycling... To give you an idea, here you have us cycling along the Senderos del Carbón!
Floating standing on water
The sensation of floating on your feet on the water, keeping your balance, is like no other you have ever experienced. There are many nautical devices for navigating the waters of the sea or rivers, but among them all, there is one that provides a very special feeling of disconnection and relaxation, and that is the paddle surf board.
This sport, which has been around for a few years now, has experienced a real boom in Asturias in the last five years, and the fact is that the Asturian coast has idyllic places to practise it, where not only the landscape, but also the geographical conditions of rivers, estuaries and some beaches, where the waters are as calm as those of a swimming pool...
So Asturias is a true paradise for SUP or Stand Up Paddle, and if you try it, you will surely repeat. To whet your appetite, this image in the Niembro inlet, in Llanes, is worth a thousand words, right?
Air navigation in the middle of forests and valleys
If you've never tried zip-lining through the air, you don't quite know what you're missing. The sensation must be similar to the flight of a bird in the middle of nature, especially when you pick up speed, and the progressive discharge of adrenaline will leave you with an infinite feeling of relaxation, especially at the end of this whirlwind trip that will not taste like anything else...
The zip lines in Asturias are always located in the middle of dreamlike landscapes. This way it is much more pleasant to try them, it is like a kind of aerial navigation in the middle of forests and valleys, gorges, almost impossible orographies, which otherwise you would not be able to know.
As a sample, in the picture you have a "flight" on a zip line in Ponga, simply dreamlike!
The warm spell of the waves
The first thing that strikes you about the Bay of Biscay is the strength of its tides and the beauty of its waves. There are many ways to play with the waves and enjoy them, and one of the most educational and rewarding is surfing. Sport, choreography, balance, ability to observe the natural environment, endurance, power, relaxation... All this and much more will be provided by a good surfing session, like the one shown in the photo on the famous Salinas beach.
Suitable for children and adults, surfing is a sport that helps to harmonise social and family relationships. So it's not a bad idea for the summer to sign up for a course at one of the wonderful beaches in Asturias that have schools, of which there are many, both in the west and in the centre and east.
And you don't need anything else... Just let yourself be carried away by the warm spell of the waves!
