It was consecrated in 893 by seven bishops, according to the tombstone preserved in the south side chapel.
It has a basilica floor plan with three naves, a tripartite chancel with small chapels, and two compartments attached to the north and south walls that externally act as a false transept.
At the foot of the church there are three compartments that correspond to those of the chancel, and above the central one is the royal tribune that receives direct light from a mullioned window opening in the main front.
The tall, narrow naves are separated by semicircular arches on undecorated square pillars, while the apse chapels are separated from the naves by semicircular arches resting on columns with capitals decorated with vegetal motifs.
All the interior spaces are vaulted and important remains of mural paintings have been preserved.
