The path, simple but captivating, culminates at the spectacular waterfall, shrouded in legends. An ideal plan to enjoy with the family, surrounded by magic and nature.

The Cioyo Waterfall route is a short but charming route that takes us to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in western Asturias. The route starts in Penzol, from where we take the CP-4 road heading south. On reaching a signposted crossroads, an asphalted track of approximately one and a half kilometres leads to the car park set up for hikers.

The path begins by entering a leafy forest of oak, chestnut and hazel trees, creating a cool and shady environment that invites you to enjoy the walk. The characteristic humidity of the area is reflected in the undergrowth of ferns and mosses that cover the stones and the ground, giving the landscape an almost magical appearance. The murmur of the water accompanies the walker from the first few metres, increasing in intensity as the path approaches the river.

The route, of moderate difficulty, has a gentle descent at the beginning, but in its final stretch it becomes more irregular due to the erosion caused by the water. Along the route, a rope handrail helps to overcome the most slippery points, guaranteeing the hiker's safety. The last section, which is steeper and rockier, requires caution, especially in rainy weather, when the ground can be wetter and more slippery.

Finally, the effort is rewarded when you reach the Cascada del Cioyo waterfall, where the water falls from a height of several metres to form a crystal-clear pool surrounded by dense vegetation. The sound of the rushing water and the play of light filtering through the trees create a unique and breathtaking atmosphere. It is the perfect place to stop, rest and enjoy the serenity of nature in its purest state.

Legend has it that the waterfall was created by a xana, an Asturian fairy, who lived in the forest. One day, when she saw that a young man was going to be swept away by the current during a storm, the xana used her magic to create the pool, preventing the young man from falling into the void. Since then, the waterfall has retained that mystical air that attracts visitors so much.

The return journey is by the same route, which allows you to enjoy the surroundings from a different perspective. The Cioyo Waterfall route is an ideal option for those who are looking for a short route but with a great natural attraction, accessible to most hikers and perfect for a day out with the family.
