Along the route you can enjoy wide views of the surrounding valleys and discover historical elements such as the old cable car that connected El Espín and A Paicega during the construction of the Grandas de Salime reservoir.

This variant of the PR-AS 185 Cordal de Coaña transforms the route into a circular route that combines history and mountain landscapes. The starting point is the Castro de Coaña, an archaeological site more than 2,500 years old, although the remains that can be seen today correspond to a Roman occupation from the 2nd century AD. This site, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, is one of the most significant in Asturias. Next to it is the Aula Didáctica del Castro de Coaña, which allows visitors to learn about the social and defensive organisation of the ancient settlers.
From here, the route begins the ascent to the Alto de Seya Fermosa (710 m), the highest point on the route. On the way up, the path crosses Busnovo, a small village crossed by the Sarríou stream. Further on, to the left of the path, you can see the remains of the cable car that linked El Espín with A Paicega, used between 1950 and 1953 to transport materials during the construction of the Grandas de Salime reservoir. This infrastructure, with a length of 30 km and a drop of 740 metres, was one of the most impressive of its time.
The route continues ascending by road for about 4.5 km, until it connects with a mountain track which, in a zigzagging route, crosses mixed forests until it reaches the top of Seya Fermosa. This section, although demanding, allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery, with views of the valleys and mountains surrounding Coaña.
From the top, the route becomes gentler, beginning the descent towards the Orbaelle pass, a plain surrounded by pine woods where it is common to find cattle grazing. Caution is recommended in this area, especially if you are with children or dogs.
Continuing the descent, you reach the Bustabernego viewpoint, a panoramic point that offers a privileged view of the east of the council of Coaña, with landscapes that extend as far as Navia, the mouth of the Navia estuary and Villayón.
The route continues towards the San Luis Recreational Area, where the San Luis Hermitage is located, an ideal place to take a break before continuing along the route. Before returning to the starting point, the route crosses Teijedo, a small village belonging to the parish of Villacondide, from where the final stretch back to Castro de Coaña begins.
This circular route combines history, nature and tradition, offering an excellent opportunity to discover the archaeological and landscape heritage of the council of Coaña.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
