The route combines stretches of cliffs, viewpoints and small coastal villages, ending at Playa del Silencio, an iconic spot on the western coast of Asturias.

The route begins at the Cape Vidio lighthouse, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline. Below the lighthouse is La Iglesiona, a large cave formed by wave erosion, accessible only at low tide and recommended to be visited with specialised guides. The path continues well signposted, passing next to the descent to Peñadoira Beach and reaching Oviñana, where the route skirts the coast and allows us to contemplate Cueva Beach.

The route continues in a westerly direction to the Sablón viewpoint, where it begins a downhill stretch along a loose stone path, followed by a climb to a small plain. From this point, the path descends to Vallina Beach, where there are two alternatives: continue along the beach if the tide is low, saving 4 km, or climb up a 30-metre slope using rope handrails to come out at Los Zerros and continue along a beautiful path to Valdredo.

We continue up a small slope towards Albuerne; on the right hand side the path descends along the cliffs of Gancedo beach to the Llendebarcas river, with Cala Salencia in the background. We continue the route with a climb of approximately two kilometres that takes us to Novellana. Following the track we find the beach of L' Airín from where we can contemplate the crag of Fornón.

The last stretch of the route runs along a coastal path that leads to the Playa del Silencio beach, an enclave surrounded by cliffs with a very attractive landscape. This point marks the end of the route, from where you can choose to return along the same path or link up with other routes along the western coast of Asturias. The route can be done in a linear way from the Vidio lighthouse to Castañeras or in the opposite direction, enjoying in both cases the spectacular coastal landscapes of the area.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
