Cultural visits with your dog in Asturias
Asturias has a wide range of cultural venues throughout the region for you to visit with your pet and have a great time.
Culture is one of those experiences you always want to share with your pet. In Asturias there is a wide range of cultural spaces - especially outdoors - where you can take your pet and have a great time together, and what is more important, they are places with a special strength, a kind of energy poles where you can recharge your batteries in the company of your dog.
Castros, dolmens, megaliths, museums and collections, parks and gardens, interpretation centres and other spaces are places to have a great time, in the midst of places of great beauty and learning a lot about prehistory, history, nature, art, and culture in general, not only in Asturias but in a much wider geographical and human context.
We begin here a tour of different cultural spaces to go with your pet that will surely meet your expectations!
On route through the Asturian castros
Going on a route through the castros of Asturias is a real marvel, and if you can also share these routes and moments with your pet, then happiness is complete.
As you know, the castreña culture - prior to the arrival of the Romans in Asturias - was very established and widespread in this land. The castro was, in essence, a settlement installed in an orographically dominant place to which its inhabitants also endowed often monumental defences.
Well, these spaces, some of which are still in good condition today, are ideal to visit with your pet. There are several reasons for this: because they are in the open air, because they are in splendid spots with panoramic views and in the middle of routes that are easy to follow with your dog, and because they have an indescribable charm that will captivate you both.
Some of the forts you can visit together are the San Chuis fort in Allande; the Pendia fort in Boal; the Mohías fort in Coaña; the El Castelón fort in Illano; the San Isidro fort in San Martín de Oscos, and Os Castros in Taramundi.
All of them will leave you speechless!
Getting to know dolmens, megaliths and necropolises
If you are interested in prehistory and the world of funerary rituals, Asturias has some very interesting places to visit, and you can go with your pet.
Necropolises, megaliths and dolmens are funerary and commemorative monuments that arose in prehistoric times, and of which Asturias preserves remarkable testimonies.
One of the necropolises you can visit is Monte Areo, an important archaeological site located between the municipalities of Carreño and Gijón.
On the other hand, between the municipalities of Lena and Aller, in the parish of Boo, in the middle of the Roman road of La Carisa, you will find the Megaliths of El Padrún, a funerary monument made up of several dolmens, but of which only two remain, although the remains of others can be seen.
Asturias is also a great archaeological reserve of dolmen culture. Some of them are well preserved, and as is usually the case with these ritual monuments, they are located in particularly beautiful and peaceful places. This is the case, for example, of the dolmen of Merillés, in Tineo; the dolmen of Entrerríos, in Illano, and the dolmen of Pradías, in Ibias. And you can visit all three with your pet for an unforgettable walk.
Asturias is so rich in archaeology that you and your pet can become real "Indiana Jones"!
Museum plans
If you like museums, Asturias offers a wide range of museums, both outdoors and indoors. And they are scattered all over Asturias. So you and your pet can go on a real museum tour where you will find all kinds of facilities.
From some of them in the open air with wonderful coastal landscapes, as in the case of the Anchor Museum, in Salinas (Castrillón), in the Archaeological Park of Campa Torres, in Gijón, or in the exterior of the Jurassic Museum of Asturias, in Colunga.

You can also enjoy the beautiful gardens of the Evaristo Valle Museum in Gijón, or the Ethnographic Museum of Quirós, where you can be together both inside and outside.
On the other hand, the Rozadas Ethnographic Collection, in Boal; the La Cobertoria Pre-Romanesque Didactic Classroom, in Lena; the House of Time, in Piloña, or the Marquis of Sargadelos Birthplace Museum, in Santa Eulalia de Oscos, can all be visited with your pet (although in the latter it is advisable to give prior notice).
In Asturias, visiting museums with your pet is fun and enjoyable!
Visiting parks and gardens
The Park of Life, in La Mata (Valdés), very close to Luarca/Ḷḷuarca, is a very special place, where you can discover the mysteries of life, through terrestrial geology, marine ecosystems or the exploration of the cosmos. And whether it's sunny or cloudy, you have 3 hectares of forest to explore, in a walk of one and a half kilometres. The park's exteriors are ideal for pets, as are the interiors, which are a real source of knowledge and wisdom.
On the other hand, the Fonte Baixa Forest-Garden is one of the most outstanding botanical spaces in Europe. It is also known as the Jardines de Panrico or the Jardines del Chano, since it is located in this place, which can be reached by a wooden staircase from the Second Beach of Luarca/Ḷḷuarca. These impressive gardens, which are perfectly visible from both the Muelle Nuevo and the Capilla de la Atalaya (Lighthouse, Cemetery), cover an area of 20 hectares.
The tours are guided, so it is best to call in advance and book to get a place in a group. During the tour you will be able to observe various species: azaleas, rhododendrons, beeches, camellias, cedars, weeping willows, araucarias, bamboo, etc. In addition, the different paths and trails established will reveal more than just the interesting vegetation and flora: fountains, sculptures, arches and viewpoints - some with spectacular views - will complete the tour.
An ideal excursion to share with your pet!
Discovering other spaces
As well as museums and open-air cultural spaces, there are a series of interpretation and visitor reception centres where you can go with your pet and have a great time.
This is the case of the Casa del Lobo, in Belmonte; the Pedro Pidal Visitor Centre, in the surroundings of the Covadonga Lakes, in the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park; the Besullo Visitor Reception Centre. Alejandro Casona, in Cangas del Narcea, or the Sierra del Sueve Visitor Centre, in Gobiendes (Colunga), which offers a wide range of visits and routes.
There are also unique spaces such as La Laboral City of Culture - with splendid exteriors - where your pet will be delighted outdoors. Other unique and charming places that allow pets outdoors are the Museo de los Molinos de Mazonovo, and the Conjunto Etnográfico de Os Teixóis, both in Taramundi. The Mazonovo Ethnographic Ensemble, in Santa Eulalia de Oscos, allows dogs both indoors and outdoors.
