- Title Cangas del Narcea Western Asturias
- Address Address: ■ 33819 - L'Acebu
Located on a hill at an altitude of 1,180 metres, 12 kilometres from Cangas del Narcea, L'Acebu has its origins in 8 September 1575, when the first miracle took place on the site of an old chapel.
The news of the many miracles of L'Acebu spread throughout the Principality, turning the hermitage into a place of prayer. This led to the building of a church whose construction was completed 15 years after the first miracle. It has a Latin cross plan, with a tower at the front and a sacristy attached to the southeast corner, of sober construction in polished stone.
The main altarpiece was replaced at the end of the 17th century by the one that can be seen today, following the style of the main altarpiece of the Monastery of Corias, with bowered Solomonic columns, which also appears in nearby churches such as the Church of Santa María de Celón.
The Romanesque image of the Virgin probably dates back to the 13th century. Father Alberto Colunga, a Dominican, describes it as follows: "In its primitive form it was a carving and was seated on a throne, and on the left knee was seated the Child, who was looking forward, with the right hand giving the blessing and with the left hand holding a book". With the passing of time, this image was retouched to adapt it to the fashion of dressing images, and in 1900 it was reformed again to replace the Child with the present one.
On the 8th of September, a multitudinous pilgrimage is held on the Day of the Promises, and the following Sunday, the Day of the Offerings, is celebrated with a procession and blessing of livestock.
The viewpoints located in the vicinity of the hermitage offer panoramic views of the valleys and mountains that surround the town of Cangas del Narcea.
