- Type Type: Festivity of Tourist Interest of the Principality of Asturias
It has established itself as a benchmark for crafts, gastronomy and tourism in Gijón. The quality of its products is its main distinctive feature and attraction, together with the activities and workshops that it has been organising since it was founded sixteen years ago, which allow locals and tourists to get to know the culture and reality of Asturias in a participative and educational way.
Located in the Plaza Mayor, in the heart of Gijón/Xixón, it has become an eagerly awaited meeting point for Asturian crafts, which takes place on the second weekend of every month.
The Market is held on the second weekend of every month in Gijón/Xixón, with the exception of Easter and the long weekend of the Constitution, when it changes its usual date to coincide with these holidays due to the large number of tourists visiting the city.
The Market has a wide range of products on offer, always distinguished by their high quality. The Asturian handicrafts combine tradition and modernity. They are exclusive, unique, handmade following the patterns of ancient crafts and highly valued nationally.
The Market presents a complete sample of guilds, including jet, leather, woodcarving, weaving, embossing, jewellery, glass, stationery, painting, stone, etc.
As for gastronomy, the public can enjoy organic and traditional products, such as bread, sausages, cheeses, honey, jams, fruit and vegetables, among many others.
As part of its vocation for solidarity, the Artisan Market also offers a range of products from cooperatives in Southern countries that respect the social and environmental conditions of the countries of origin.
In addition to its quality and excellence, it is distinguished from other fairs by the uniqueness conferred by the fact that the artisans themselves are responsible for its development. The Artisan and Ecological Market Association is also working to surprise visitors with new activities, exhibitions and workshops, whose aim is to bring Asturian culture and traditions closer to the public in a participative, educational and entertaining way.
