Casín Cheese is one of the oldest known cheeses. It is an exquisite and elaborated artisan product made from raw cow's milk, which has a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
The local community of the municipality of Caso - especially its women - has managed to keep this ancestral tradition alive, despite the hardships that the countryside has experienced throughout history.
Since time immemorial, the coexistence between the people of Caso and the cattle has resulted in a symbiosis that goes beyond mere economic exploitation, with Casín Cheese being the delicious testament to that unique relationship.
For this reason, the Casín Cheese Contest has been held annually for several decades, usually taking place on the last Saturday of August.
The event revolves around two fundamental aspects: the market with stalls of Casín Cheese producers and the cheese competition among dairies affiliated with the Casín Cheese PDO. Parallel to these activities, various complementary events take place, such as cooking contests, tastings, workshops, exhibitions, performances by folk groups, charity marathons, and special menus.
Furthermore, this contest provides an excellent opportunity to get to know the Redes Natural Park better. Its landscapes, routes, museums, people, and the lively festive atmosphere of this unique area of Asturias.
