A circular route that combines landscape, heritage and nature in a setting of great beauty between cliffs, forests and sea.
The Pimiango Cliffs Route offers a circular route that combines coastal landscape, cultural heritage and nature at the eastern end of the council of Ribadedeva.
The starting point is the Pindal Cave car park, from where you take a path that descends to the cave, one of the main sites of Palaeolithic cave art in Asturias. Its paintings - including bison, deer, horses, a fish and even a mammoth - turn the visit (by prior reservation) into a journey to the origin of human expression.
On the way back to the interpretation centre, turn left to approach the hermitage of San Emeterio, also known as Santu Medé. It only opens its doors on the Sunday following the 3rd of March, the saint's day, to host one of the most deeply-rooted pilgrimages in the area. The meadow is then filled with pilgrims; young men and women celebrate the ramu with dances, chants and displays of faith in the saint, who is believed to have the power to alleviate rheumatism, arthrosis and other ailments. The shrine in front of the hermitage, a small open chapel, preserves the missing image of the saint in ceramic.
The route continues through woods until it reaches the ruins of the church of Santa María de Tina, a 13th century temple declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Its walls evoke the history of this ancient sanctuary hidden in the green of the forest.
From there, the path heads towards the coast, entering an environment of native vegetation with wild olive trees, holm oaks and Atlantic species. The path, always quiet, crosses more shady and wooded areas, giving the walker a sensory experience marked by the murmur of the sea, the song of the birds and the fragrance of the undergrowth.
The route reaches its highest point at Punta de Tina, a natural balcony overlooking the Bay of Biscay, from where you can see the Tinamayor estuary, which separates Asturias from Cantabria. This natural viewpoint invites you to take a long pause to admire the coast, the cliffs and the immensity of the sea.
From this point, the route heads towards Pimiango, crossing open landscapes and reaching a small viewpoint with spectacular panoramic views. In the centre of Pimiango, you can visit the church of San Roque, which preserves architectural elements representative of the local tradition.
The final section of the route leads to the Picu viewpoint, which offers a privileged view of the Bay of Biscay and the cliffs of the eastern coast of Asturias. From there, the route returns to the starting point. With a distance of just 8 kilometres and no great physical demands, this route is ideal for both experienced hikers and families. A perfect way to immerse yourself in the history, landscape and nature of one of the most evocative areas of eastern Asturias.

Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
