The route passes by heritage sites such as the Alevia Tower or the Indian mansions Quinta de Arriba and Quinta de Abajo; history, with the remains of the Mina del Pilar; and nature, with the impressive views from the top of Pico Paisano.

The Pico Paisano route from Alevia is a circular itinerary that combines spectacular views, industrial history and architectural heritage in the heart of the Sierra del Cuera.

The route starts in the charming village of Alevia, a rural centre that preserves the flavour of the Asturian past. As soon as you arrive, you'll notice two houses of the Indianos: the Quinta de Arriba and the Quinta de Abajo, which give the urban landscape a distinguished air. In the upper part of the village you can visit the hermitage of San Antonio, the Alevia tower and a viewpoint from which you can enjoy impressive panoramic views of the valley and the Picos de Europa.

From the village centre, the path ascends gently between meadows and fields bounded by dry stone walls. As you gain height, the landscape changes: pastures give way to forests of oak and hazelnut trees, in a cool, shady environment that is accompanied by the whisper of the wind and the clean mountain air.

Halfway up, the route passes by the remains of the old Pilar Mine, a 19th century iron and manganese mine. These industrial ruins, with tunnels and stone walls covered with vegetation, allow us to imagine the hard life of the miners who worked in this mountain range.

The climb continues uphill until we reach the chapel of San Antonio, built in the surroundings of Pico Muniano. From here, the last effort takes us to the summit of Pico El Paisano, the culminating point of the route. The views from the summit are impressive: on one side, the valleys of Peñamellera and, in the background, the Picos de Europa; on the other, on clear days, you can see the Cantabrian Sea glittering on the horizon. A perfect place to stop, rest and enjoy the silence of the altitude.

The return is along the same path to the La Pipa hut, where you take a detour to the left to complete the loop and return to Alevia along a comfortable and uncomplicated path.

This route is an ideal proposal for those looking for a walk that combines heritage, history and nature, with the reward of one of the best views in the region.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
