Highlights along the way include the unique trenches of La Isla and the impressive Jurassic site of La Griega, where dinosaur fossil footprints are preserved. A perfect route to enjoy the Jurassic Coast of Asturias.

The coastal route that links the Arenal de Morís beach with La Griega beach combines nature, historical and geological heritage and some of the most spectacular views of the eastern coast of Asturias. Along its 11 kilometres, the route links two signposted paths: the GR-204 to the beach of La Espasa and the PR-AS 134 from La Isla to La Griega.

The starting point is at the Arenal de Morís car park, from where you walk along a path that alternates between green meadows, coastal paths and beaches. At every step, you have views of the Cantabrian Sea, the rugged profile of the coast and, in the background, the Sierra del Sueve mountain range, always present as a backdrop.

After leaving La Beciella beach behind, the path leads to La Espasa beach, with toasted sand and moderate waves, ideal for surfing. Very close by is the beach of El Barrigón, more sheltered by Punta del Cuervo, and just beyond is the beach of La Isla, which at low tide joins the previous beach to form an extensive stretch of sand.

From La Isla, a narrow path along the coast leads to the Trincheras de La Isla, a unique defensive structure excavated in a radial layout during the Civil War, the only one of its kind in Asturias. From here, the landscape becomes more rugged, with cliffs, eucalyptus forests and coastal vegetation shaped by the wind.

The final section of the route runs between rural roads, small villages such as Güerres and San Xuan, and offers panoramic views of the village of Llastres. Shortly before reaching our destination, we come to one of the most fascinating points on the route: the Jurassic site of La Griega, where we can see some of the largest dinosaur footprints in the world, perfectly preserved in the rock next to the sea.

The walk ends at La Griega beach, ideal for resting and enjoying the surroundings. The combination of coast, history, geology and landscape make this route an unforgettable experience, perfect for curious hikers and lovers of the Asturian coastline.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
