During the tour, you can visit the Cave of Fonchada, where, according to legend, Muslim troops fleeing from Don Pelayo took refuge.

The Magical Forest and Chagüeños Lakes Trail begins in La Prohída, in the municipality of Degaña, beside the AS-15 road. The path descends towards the Las Corradas field, entering a forest of oak, beech and birch trees. Along the way, small sculptures and symbols of Celtic inspiration lend a mystical air to the surroundings.

The path continues uphill to a dense beech forest, where the cool, damp air accompanies you along the way. The route leads to the first lake, known as Chagunacho or Changuneto. Nearby lies a small grazing plain that recalls the ancestral use of these lands by the ‘vaqueiros de alzada’ (mountain herdsmen). Further on, after walking some 400 metres amongst the rocks, the route reaches Laguna de Chagüeños, also known as Chagueños or Changueños, situated in a spectacular glacial cirque. The crystal-clear waters and the small spring nearby offer an ideal spot to rest.

The return journey follows the same path, descending once more through the forest to La Prohída. This route, of medium difficulty, features a challenging ascent and stands out for its natural and cultural charm, making it ideal for those seeking an immersive experience in south-western Asturias.

Basic tips before going into the mountains

  • If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
  • Avoid approaching livestock.
  • If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
  • Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
  • Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
