From the summit and the recreational area you can enjoy wide panoramic views of the Villaviciosa estuary. The route can be completed in a circular route, passing through Viñón and its rural museum. An accessible and very complete option between nature, culture and traditional Asturian landscape.
The route to Peña Cabrera starts in Santolaya de Cabranes, next to the church of Santa Eulalia, one of the best examples of Asturian religious architecture. From this point, the path enters the village and climbs progressively along rural paths, between farms, meadows and mixed forests of oak, chestnut and eucalyptus trees.
After overcoming the first uphill stretch, the landscape opens up, revealing views of the valleys formed by the rivers Viacaba and Profundo.
At the height of Valbuena, the path continues through high, clear areas, offering open views on both sides of the route. Finally, you reach the summit of Peña Cabrera, one of the highest points in the area, with an exceptional view of central-eastern Asturias. A few metres away is the recreational area of Peña Cabrera, equipped with tables, benches and a natural viewpoint overlooking the Villaviciosa estuary.
From here, there are two options: retrace your steps along the same path or continue towards Viñón, which makes the route a circular one. This second option allows you to visit the Asturias Rural School Museum, a charming space that recreates daily life in an Asturian village. On the ground floor, traditional furniture and rural household utensils are exhibited, while on the upper floor there is a "classroom of yesterday", with desks, maps, encyclopaedias and original school materials, offering visitors a nostalgic look at the school of yesteryear, faithful to the memory of those who lived there.
Also in Viñón you can visit the Romanesque church of San Julián, declared a Provincial Monument of Historic-Artistic Interest in 1965, an example of the rich religious heritage of the area.
The return to Santolaya is along a quiet and shady stretch that runs parallel to the river Viacaba, thus closing an itinerary that unites nature, culture and rural memory. Without great technical difficulties and with good signposting, it is a very complete route to discover the identity of the Asturian interior.

Basic tips before going into the mountains
- Avoid approaching livestock.
- If you find mastiffs protecting livestock, do not approach them, do not pet them and do not feed them. Do not allow them to follow you or stray from their herd. They are working.
- If you go with a dog, always keep it on a leash.
- Don't leave a trail. Collect all your waste, including organic waste. Nature is not a dumping ground.
- Act with prudence. Plan your route well, take everything you need and make sure it is adapted to your physical capacity.
